So far in the “How Big” series, we have seen the incredible size of companies like Estee Lauder, Luxottica and McDonald’s. Each of them is way bigger than we could have ever imagined. But today we are doing something different. Today we aren’t doing big. Today, we are going massive! Bigger than the biggest names in the world, meet Walmart!

Started in 1962 as a small grocery store in Arkansas, United States by a young Sam Walton, today, Walmart is the biggest retail chain in the world. From hitting the $1 billion mark for the first time in 1979, it generated more than 482 billion dollars in revenue in 2016. This is more than the total revenue of Apple, Google, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and Facebook combined! Just so you know, these are the top five most valuable brands in the world. Quite remarkable! In fact, Walmart has more revenue than the total GDP of countries like Poland, Belgium, Thailand, UAE, South Africa, Singapore, Portugal, Qatar, New Zealand, Croatia, Iceland, and Mauritius. Speaking of countries, if Walmart was a country, it would be the 25th largest economy in the world. A country with only Walmart employees would also be more populated than 88 countries in the world.

The original Five and Dime store in Arkansas

The first ever Sam Walton’s store, called Five and Dime store, in Arkansas. It now serves as the Walmart Visitor Center.

Wait, did someone mention employees? Well, Walmart has lots of them. With more employees than McDonald’s (1.9 million), it is the biggest private employer in the world. In fact, only two organizations have more employees than Walmart, the US Army and the Chinese Army. You know you are big when you are competing neck and neck with the biggest armies in the world. Which is why it should be no surprise to see that it employs more people than HP, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, General Motors, Starbucks, Ford, Walt Disney, Amazon, Costco, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook AND American Airlines COMBINED. Phew! All of these companies: ~2,199,000 employees. Walmart: ~2,300,000 employees.

You might be wondering how is all of this even possible. Well, the answer lies in the fact that Americans spend more than 36 million dollars every single hour at Walmart. That’s 864 million dollars in just one day. Additionally, more than 200 million customers shop every single week in its various stores. In other words, more people shop at Walmart every week than the entire population of Germany, United Kingdom, and France combined. Of course, this means that it makes some serious profits. How much, you might ask? No less than $21,000 every single minute. Walmart can literally buy 30 iPhone 6S every minute, burn them and still be in profit.

Five Facts about Walmart

So how does it manages to even fit so many people in its stores every week? Well, that’s not a problem with all the 11,527 stores in 28 countries. In fact, if you were to stretch all of these stores one after another, the resulting area would be bigger than the entire city of Leicester, United Kingdom. It would also be 150% bigger than the total area of Manhattan. Moreover, just the parking space of all these Walmart stores is bigger than the entire area of the city of Tampa, Florida.

While all of this is fascinating as it is, the story of how Walmart began is even better. I will be covering that in another post this week. What would you like to read next?
